Biography

George Lewis Twyford was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and an Engineer when he enlisted with the 37th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement on 20 October 1917 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1917 and proceeded to France from England on 20 May 1918. Aside from a brief trip to hospital for illness in February 1918 and again in September 1919, he completes his term of service without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia on 6 October 1919.
