Biography

William James Armstrong (SN 6951), from Grant Street in Ballarat, was born at Kiata in the Wimmera but was married and working as a 22 year old masseur when he enlisted on October 5th 1916. On November 23rd he embarked aboard the ‘Hororata’ to serve with the 38th Battalion on the Western Front. After further training in England, he reached the battlefields in August 1917 but on October 12th he received multiple gunshot wounds in the heavy fighting at Passchendaele. He was evacuated to Etaples but died of his wounds three days later on October 15th 1917. He was 23 years of age and was buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
