Born in Geelong, Victoria, Charles James McGann was a single 18 year old storeman at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on the 22nd of August 1917. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board RMS Orontes on the 5th of June 1918.
On the 8th of June 1919, Charles embarked for England and was admitted to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Dartford, England with an accidental injury to his left wrist, where the ulnar artery and tendons were cut.
Charles returned to Australia on the 23rd of October 1919, and was discharged as medically unfit on the 31st of October 1919.
