Biography

Gordon Oliver Oswald Shannon was born in Haddon, Victoria, was single and a Student in Ballarat when he enlisted with the 58th Battalion, 10th Reinforcement on 20 November 1917 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Ormonde on 7 March 1918. He was admitted to hospital, suffering from influenza on 24 April 1918, discharged to duty on 4 May. On 25 May 1918 he transferred to Alexandria for embarkation overseas (Southampton). After returning overseas to France he was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to the back and was evacuated to hospital in England on 30 September 1918. He received a medical discharge on 2 March 1919.
