Carl William Schroeder was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and an Electrical mechanic when he enlisted in the 58th Battalion, 10th Reinforcement on 12 December 1917 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Ormonde on 7 March 1918. On or about 19 August 1918 he attended Lewis Gun Course and qualified as 1st Class in his exams. He then proceeded overseas to France where he later transferred from the 58th Battalion to the 5th Divisional Train Convoy as a Driver. He then returned to Australia aboard the Port Denison on 15 March 1919.
