Biography

Oliver Newland was and 18 year old draper who was born and enlisted in Ballarat. He enlisted on the 5th of October 1914 and his unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A46 Clan Macgillivray on the 2nd of February 1915. On the 4th of April he was taken on strength with the 58th Battalion from the 59th. On the 24th of September 1916 he was appointed Lance Corporal. Oliver was promoted to Corporal on November 12th 1916. On March 11th 1917 he was wounded in action with gunshot wounds to his right foot, left leg and fingers. He returned to Australia on the 12th of January 1918 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 22nd of February 1918.
