Biography

Bertram (Bert) Clarence Shortridge (SN 293) was born in Ballarat but enlisted at Townsville, Qld., on January 24th 1916. He was 28 years old, single, and employed as a fitter mechanic. He was allotted to the 3rd Division Headquarters and embarked from Sydney in May 1916 on board the Demosthenes. After a period spent with the Australian Flying Corps he was transferred to 41st Infantry Battalion and reached France in August 1917. On October 16th 1917 he died of wounds received at Passchendaele and is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendaele, Belgium.
