Biography

Frederick Charles Shingler (SN 26182) was born in Ballarat and educated at Urquhart Street State School. He was 32 years old, unmarried and employed as a labourer when he enlisted in Perth, W.A., on November 5th 1915. He was posted to the 51st Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in August 1916 on board the Orsova. After training in England, he reached France in January 1917 but spent much of the next six months in hospital with trench feet. He rejoined his unit in August but, on October 14th 1917, he was killed in action in the frontline trenches near Passchendaele. He is buried in the Passchendaele New British Cemetery, Belgium.
