Biography

Martin Francis O’Farrell (SN 34140) first enlisted in early 1916 and commenced training with the 39th Battalion in Ballarat but was discharged ‘unfit’ in September. As a 23 year old farmer he enlisted again in Melbourne on December 29th 1916. On May 11th 1917 he embarked aboard the Ascanius to serve in France as a driver with the 13th Field Artillery Brigade. From July 1918 he was troubled by illness until he returned to Australia aboard the Orca, disembarked at Melbourne on April 7th 1919 and was discharged on May 7th.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as N. Frank O'Farrell.
