Charles Phillips (SN 2202) was born in Ballarat where he enlisted, aged 22, on March 10th 1916 . The unmarried labourer was posted to the 39th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne for active service in September on board the Shropshire. After a short period training in England he was posted to France but illness prevented him joining his unit until September 1917. He was killed in action at Passchendaele on October 12th 1917. With no known grave, his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
