Alfred Leslie Turnbull was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Coal Miner when he enlisted with the 8th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement on 28 March 1916 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 July 1916. His early military career passed without major incident, illness or injury, but he was reported as wounded in action on 28 September 1917 with a gunshot wound to the back, resulting in his immediate evacuation to hospital.
