Thomas Norman Stephens (SN 388) born in Melbourne, was a 20 year old clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 15th 1914. Allotted to the 5th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Orvieto and sailed with the first Anzac fleet to Egypt. While there he was found to be unfit for active service, although his service record provides no detail. He was returned aboard the Kyarra, disembarked on July 17th 1915 and was discharged medically unfit on November 24th.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as T. Norman Stephens.
