Biography

Reginald James Whitefield (SN 13052) born at Castlemaine, was a 26 year old married hairdresser when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 11th 1916. On June 3rd he embarked for overseas service, sailing to England. In November 1916 he crossed to France to serve with the 10th Field Ambulance. While he avoided battle wounds, he was troubled by influenza and trench fever and while in London he was charged with failing to salute an officer. His health prompted his early return on the Suevic. He disembarked on June 7th 1918 and was discharged on September 26th.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Reg. Whitefield.
