Thomas Rufus Rumble was born in Cape Clear, Victoria, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted in the No 1 Mining Corps on 19 July 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 20 February 1916. While in France, on 8 July 1918, he was appointed H.T. Driver with the C.O. 2nd Tunnelling Convoy before taking personal leave. According to his records he completed his tour of duty without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia on 20 May 1919 aboard the Nestor.
