Roy Harry Parkin was born in Corowa, NSW and was a Student School of Mines in Ballarat when he enlisted in the Field Ambulance 10 on 30 July 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A54 Runic on 20 June 1916. According to his records his service was uneventful other than an incident of leaving his horse unattended, for which he was admonished. Due to an issue of tooth loss or decay he returned to Australia 31 May 1919, receiving a medical discharge on 26 August 1919.
