Born in Ballarat, William Newall Hamilton was a single 19 year old fitter's apprentice when he enlisted on the 17th of August 1914. His unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board Transport A7 Medic on the 2nd of November 1914.
On June 17th 1915 William was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to the eye. He returned to Australia on the 29th of August 1915 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 25th of July 1916.
