Arthur James Trangmar (SN 611/Lt.) was born in Coleraine where he attended the local state school then Hamilton College. As a 38 year old farmer & caterer, married to Helene, he enlisted in Hamilton on February 28th 1916. He was allocated to the 39th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne aboard the Ascanius in late May. He reached France in November and in June 1917, at the rank of Sergeant, he was wounded. While recovering he undertook further training and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in December 1917. On February 21st 1918 he was killed in action in the Passchendaele area, and is buried in Berks Cemetery Ploegsteert, Belgium.
