Archibald Black, a miner from Scarsdale, enlisted in the 43rd Battalion on 21 January 1916 at the age of 28. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A19 Afric on 9 June 1916. His natural leadership and dedication to duty led him through a series of promotions and eventually a Commission to Lieutenant on 24 November 1917. He returned to Australia 23 July 1919
