Rupert Vere Horsfall, an Insurance inspector from Footscray, enlisted in the 1/6th Machine Gun Company on 31 March 1916 as a Private at the age of 27. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 4 May 1916. He was awarded a series of field promotions, resulting in a Commission to Lieutenant on 11 June 1917. On 31 January 1918 Lt Horsfall embarked from England for return to Australia.
