Ernest Kenworthy, a blacksmith from Ballarat East, enlisted in the 23rd Battalion on 20 September 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A26 Armadale on 19 July 1916. On 23 March 1918 Private Kenworthy underwent a Field Court Marshal for ædeserting His Majesty's Service' and was sentenced to 10 years penal servitude. However, on 17 August 1918 the remainder of his sentence was suspended upon being transferred to the Front. On 20 August 1918 he was admitted to hospital for a septic left ankle and was invalided to England. He received his final discharge and returned to Australia 23 September 1919
