John Holst (SN 1623) was a 34 year old from Windermere Street in Ballarat when he enlisted in October 1914. His occupation was recorded as both cook and farmer. He embarked on the Runic in February 1915 and sailed to Egypt. He was hospitalised there for a period, but despite his declining health, he was deployed to Gallipoli with the 6th Battalion in early May. His health continued to decline, and after little more than a week on Gallipoli, he was returned to hospital in Egypt where he was assessed as unfit for active service. He was repatriated to Australia aboard the Kanowna, disembarking in March 1916. In September 1916 he was discharged as medically unfit, suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis which claimed his life on February 12th 1917, aged 36.
