Born in Sebastopol, Victoria, John Holst was a single 34 year old farmer when he enlisted in Ballarat on the 15th of October 1914. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A54 Runic on the 19th of February 1915.
John was discharged as medically unfit on the 6th of September 1916 due to tuberculosis.
