William James Scott, a farmer from Ballarat North, enlisted in the 39th Battalion on 8 July 1916 at the age of 39. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 25 September 1916. On 26 January 1917 Private Scott transferred from 3rd Reinforcements to the 39th Battalion. On 1 February 1918 Private Scott was awarded the Military medal 'on 4th October 1917, East of YPRES, he displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action.' He returned to Australia 17 March 1919.
