John Sinclair McIver, a Ballarat-born club steward from New South Wales, enlisted in the 1st Machine Gun Company on 22 August 1916 at the age of 30. He was married to Mrs E B McIver of 115 Pitt Street, Redfern, New South Wales. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 11 May 1917. He was transferred to the 1st Machine Gun Battalion on 21 March 1918 and promoted to Sergeant on 14 August 1918. He returned to Australia 17 March 1919 and received his final discharge on 6 June 1919.
