Walter Williams, a blacksmith from Ballarat, enlisted in the Australian Railway Operations Division on 29 December 1916 at the age of 31. He was married to Mrs Florence Williams of 45 Lambeth Street, Kensington, Victoria. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on 19 February 1917. He received his final discharge as 'medically unfit' on 9 January 1920. The exact cause was not listed, but it was mentioned his disability was ædue to military service'.
