Biography

Herbert Saunders Smith, a butcher from Eddington, Victoria, originally enlisted in the 8th A.R.H. on 25 April 1917 under the name HARRY SAUNDERS and then re-enlisted in the 8th Light Horse Regiment on 14 May 1917 at the age of 18 under his true name. Quite possibly because he may have been 17 years of age at the time of his initial enlistment date despite having noted his age of 18 years 6 months. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth on 2 November 1917. He returned to Australia 3 July 1919.
