Biography

George Leslie Smith, a larbourer from Melbourne, enlisted in the 14th battalion on 15 September 1914 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1914. On 25 January 1916 h was transferred to the Camel Corps and promoted to Lance Corporal a month later. After a brief stay in hospital he was discharged back to his unit and was later promoted to Corporal on 9 March 1917. On 29 June 1918 he marched to Light Horse Details as Acting Sergeant, reverting back to Corporal upon the return of the company Sergeant. He returned to Australia 13 October 1918
