Biography

William Culley Smith, a labourer from Eddington, Vic, enlisted in the 8th Light Horse Regiment on 27 July 1915 at the age of 36. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT SS Hawkes Bay on 21 October 1915. He was temporarily attached to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade on 23 November 1916. He suffered a contusion and abrasions to the right arm due to a camel bite, resulting in hospitalisation with the 14th Australian General Hospital. On 6 December 1918 he was again hospitalised for illness (malaria) and later returned to Australia 29 April 1919. He was discharged on 12 June 1919 as 'medically unfit'. Tree No. 3149
