Biography

Vernon Thomas Brookes (SN 389) attended state school at Smeaton then Ballarat High School before becoming a teacher at Duliston in Gippsland. He rode 60 miles on horse back in order to enlist at Orbost on October 17th 1914. He embarked with the 7th Battalion aboard the Hororata on October 19th and sailed to Egypt for further training. Sadly, he was killed at the historic Landing at Gallipoli on April 25th 1915. He was 22 years of age and is buried in No. 2 Outpost Cemetery to the north of Anzac Cove. His service is also remembered on the honour boards of Smeaton State School and Ballarat High School.
