Biography

George Andrew Jenkin (SN 4526) was born in Broomfield, near Creswick, and attended the Broomfield State School. He enlisted at Ballarat on July 17th 1915. He was 22 years old, single, and working as a farm hand. He was posted to the 8th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Melbourne in late January 1916 on board the Themistocles. While in Egypt he was transferred to the 58th Infantry Battalion, arriving in France in June. His unit was in the trenches when he was killed in action on 29th September 1916 on his 23rd birthday. He is buried in the Rue Pettillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.

His brother Richard also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
