Francis Alfred Robert Steward, an Assayer born in Ballarat, enlisted in the 25th Battalion, 21st Reinforcement on 19 October 1917. His Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board SS Canberra on 16 November 1917. He was hospitalised briefly due to illness son 8 June 1918 due to 'auxiliary abscess', returning to duty on 28 June 1918. However, he found himself back in the hospital a month later. He eventually received a medical discharge and returned to Australia 5 March 1919.
