Biography

William Henry Loftus Thomas, a Motor Driver from Cardigan, enlisted in the 36th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 14 November 1916 at the age of 36. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A72 Beltana on 25 November 1916. He was awarded the Medaille Militaire 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations on 12th/17th October 1917 this soldier was a Despatch Runner, and throughout terrific bombardments carried out his duties with admirable coolness and determination.' He returned to Australia 15 September 1918.
