Biography

Francis ‘Frank’ Lillis (SN 748), a railway employee from Allendale, enlisted in the 5th Battalion, G Company on August 19th 1914 at the age of 30. His unit embarked from Melbourne on board the Orvieto on 21 October 1914. He was wounded in action at Krithia, Gallipoli, in May 1915. In December 1916 he reached France where he was again wounded in February 1917 ‘gunshot wound leg’. His ‘steadiness under trying circumstances in September and October, 1917’ earned him a recommendation for a Military Medal but there is no record of the award being ratified. He returned to Australia, disembarking at Melbourne on November 17th 1918. He was discharged on January 17th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Frank Lilles.
