Biography

Thomas Gerald Lillis (SN 1687) was born at Broken Hill and was a 21 year old shop assistant when he enlisted at Melbourne on May 28th 1915. On July 16th he enlisted aboard the Demosthenes and in late September he joined the 24th Battalion at Gallipoli. He was evacuated in December suffering from frostbite. After moving to France in 1916 he was wounded twice more and was also fined a day’s pay for having a dirty rifle when on guard. He also spent an extended time in the Bulford Hospital in early 1917. He returned to Australia aboard the Takada, disembarked at Melbourne on February 11th 1919 and was discharged on April 5th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Thomas G. Lilles.
