Patrick Joseph Walton, a Painter from Ballarat, enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement on 3 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 11 October 1915. He was promoted to temporary Lance Sergeant on 4 March 1917 after the death of the current Sergeant, and then was granted a permanent promotion to Lance Corporal on 5 April 1916. He returned to Australia 1 August 1919.
