Biography

Daniel Mackay (SN 14821) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old pastry cook when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 14th 1915. He trained with the Medical Corps before embarking aboard the Euripides on September 11th 1916 to sail to England. Posted to the 1st Field Ambulance, he crossed to France in February 1917. His service record indicates that he served without major illness or injury and at war’s end he returned aboard the Zealandia, disembarked at Melbourne on June 28th 1919 and was discharged on August 7th.

His brother Robert also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Dan Mackay.
