Alfred Henry Holmes (SN 1012) born in Melbourne, was a 21 year old labourer when he enlisted in Perth on September 17th1914. He embarked aboard the Medic on November 2nd and took part in the Gallipoli landing with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was evacuated in October suffering from influenza and dysentery. He then served in France with the 1st Pioneer Battalion until he was attached to the 1st Australian Divisional Headquarters. As the war neared its end he was granted ‘1914 leave’ and returned to Australia aboard the Port Sydney, disembarked at Fremantle on November 25th 1918 and was discharged on March 4th 1919.
