Biography

George John Illman (SN 18), born in Ballarat, was a 27 year old clerk when he enlisted on August 19th 1914. On October 19th he embarked aboard the Wiltshire and sailed to Egypt to serve predominantly with the 1st Field Ambulance. His service in Egypt, Britain and France was interrupted on several occasions by illnesses including varicocele and trench fever. Towards the end of the war, he was granted ‘1914 leave’ and returned to Australia aboard the Leicestershire, disembarking at Melbourne on January 22nd 1919. He was discharged on March 23rd 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as G. J. Illman.
