Biography

Arthur Vivian Deeble (Lt. Col.) was a Captain in the CMF and a teacher at Essendon High School when he was commissioned as a Captain in the AIF on October 24th 1914, aged 34. On February 25th 1915 he embarked aboard the Star of Victoria with the 8th Light Horse Regiment. He reached Gallipoli in May and was involved in the ill-fated charge at The Nek in August. In September a bout of pleurisy forced his evacuation to Mudros and then to England. During 1917 while still in England he had transfers to the 65th then 69th Infantry Battalions. In October 1917 he moved to France where he took command of the 48th Battalion. He returned to Australia aboard the Gaika, disembarked on May 12th 1918 and his commission was terminated on July 22nd.
