Biography

Thomas Victor Lakeland (SN 430) was born in Ballarat and attended Brown Hill State School. According to Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, he enlisted on October 10th 1914 but his Attestation Paper records that he enlisted 'on the high seas' on March 12th 1915, on board the Surada on which he had embarked from Fremantle the previous month. He was 25 years old, single, and a labourer, and was allocated to the 10th Light Horse Regiment. The Light Horse Regiments were sent to Gallipoli to fight as infantry. In early September 1915, he was docked five days pay for being 'Absent without leave from Heliopolis & stowing away on transport.' Only days later, Trooper Lakeland was killed in action at Gallipoli on September 10th 1915, and is buried in the Embarkation Pier Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
