Biography

Ernest Albert White (SN 283) born at Ballarat, was a 20 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Melbourne on October 15th 1914. Initially posted to the Army Veterinary Section he embarked aboard the Borda on December 22nd and sailed to Egypt where he was transferred to the 6th Field Artillery Brigade. He reached France in March 1916 and managed to avoid serious injury. In January 1917 he was transferred to the 2nd Veterinary Hospital in France until he was granted ‘1914 leave’ and returned to Australia aboard the Port Lyttleton. He embarked at Melbourne on Christmas Day 1918 and was discharged on March 4th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Albert E. White.
