Biography

Reginald Smythe (SN 464) was born in Ballarat and educated at Humffray Street State School and Grenville College. He enlisted in Melbourne as a 22 year old clerk on February 13th 1915. He joined the 22nd Battalion, B Company, and embarked for overseas service from Melbourne in May on board the Ulysses. He saw action at Gallipoli before his deployment to France in March 1916. He was killed in action on August 5th 1916. He has no known grave, but he is commemorated on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
