Biography

Joseph William Ramage (SN 222) born at Ballarat, was a 43 year old painter when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 18th 1915. On May 8th he embarked aboard the Euripides and in late August he reached Gallipoli to serve with the 23rd Infantry Battalion. In September he was wounded, suffering wounds to his head and hand that forced his evacuation. Once recovered, in August 1916 he was transferred to the 60th Battalion in France but shortly after his arrival he accidentally fractured an ankle and was evacuated to England. In July 1917 he was transferred to the Ordnance Corps in England. His ankle weakness prompted his return to Australia aboard the Ulysses. He disembarked on March 10th 1919 and was discharged medically unfit on May 9th.

His nephew Henry was killed in action in Belgium on September 29th 1917 and nephews Wallace and Rodney also served in the AIF and they are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
