Biography

Herbert Hosking (SN 2340) was born in Ballarat and attended the Queen Street State School. As a 29 year old, unmarried japanner - one skilled in the art of Japanese varnishing - he enlisted on July 3rd 1915. He was allocated to the 22nd Infantry Battalion and sailed from Melbourne on board the Osterley in late September, bound for Egypt. In March 1916 he reached France, but was killed in action at Bois Grenier on June 24th 1916. He is buried at Ration Farm Military Cemetery, France.
