Biography

William Ambrose Austin (SN 1901 / 2204) born at Horsham, was a 20 year old baker when he enlisted at Drysdale on April 16th 1915. He embarked two months later on the Wandilla, and on August 6th he came ashore to join the 8th Battalion at Anzac. He was on Gallipoli for just two weeks before he was evacuated to the island of Imbros suffering from bronchial catarrh. He was then transported to hospital in London and was unable to rejoin his unit until March 1916. His health was an ongoing issue throughout the remainder of the war. In April 1918 he was transferred to the 1st Australian Division Signals Company with which he saw out the war. He sailed from England on the Kildonan Castle and disembarked back in Australia in May 1919. He died in November 1950, aged 56, but in July 1967 his daughter, Enid made application for his previously unclaimed Gallipoli Medallion.
