Biography

Russell Aubrey Raine (SN 1947) born in Ballarat, was a 19 year old clerk when he enlisted in Ballarat on November 13th 1914. Assigned to the 22nd Battalion he embarked aboard the Anchises on August 28th 1915. He served at Gallipoli from October until the evacuation. Back in Egypt he was transferred to the newly formed 58th Battalion before moving to France. He was wounded at Fromelles in July 1916 and evacuated to hospital in England. He rejoined his unit in December only to be wounded again four days later. In October 1917 he was wounded again suffering a severe wound to his arm and again evacuated to England. Throughout his service he also recorded multiple disciplinary charges. He returned to Australia aboard the Kildonian Castle, disembarked on May 7th 1919 and was discharged on June 29th. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service numbers V6942 and V80406.

His brothers Walter, Jonathan and William also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
