Biography

Robert Stennett Maurice Sandall was born in Donald, VIC and was a Driver by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 7th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement on 27 October 1914 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A46 Clan Macgillivray on 2 February 1915. On May 8th 1915 he was wounded in action, suffering gunshot wounds to his right foot and shoulder. He was evacuated to hospital in Egypt where it was determined he should be returned to Australia. While awaiting his departure he was boarded at the Grand Hotel in Zeitoun. On April 4th 1916 he suffered a mild chest wound in Cairo – no further detail in his service record. He departed from Suez on May 11th 1916 aboard the Hospital Ship Kanowna and was discharged æmedically unfit' in August.
