Biography

Albert Ralph Gray (SN 2377) was born in Ballarat but enlisted in Perth, as a 38 year old clerk, on May 4th 1915. On August 4th 1915 he landed at Gallipoli to join the 11th Infantry Battalion. Despite an arm injury he served there through the fierce fighting of the August offensive until the campaign was abandoned in December. Back in Egypt, in February 1916, he was transferred to the newly formed 51st Battalion. A month later, complications arising from his Gallipoli elbow injury saw him hospitalised in Cairo, after which he was transferred to the Army Pay Corps. The remainder of his service was spent in administrative roles in England. After the war he returned to Australia, disembarking at Melbourne on February 8th 1919. He was discharged two months later.
