Arthur Henry Cocks (SN 1687) born at Ballarat, was a 23 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 18th 1915. On July 16th he embarked aboard the Demosthenes and in September he joined the 23rd Battalion at Gallipoli. Back in Egypt after the Gallipoli campaign was abandoned, he was troubled by dysentery and a hernia but by March 1916 he was able to move to France with his unit. In June 1917 trench fever forced his evacuation to hospital in England, and it was there that a ‘mutilated right hand’ (no details in his service record) caused him to be returned to Australia aboard the Benalla. He was discharged medically unfit on November 26th 1917.
