Alfred Claxton Borley (SN 1891) was an Englishman who enlisted in Ballarat as a 31 year old gardener. He trained in Ballarat before being assigned to the 21st Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne on August 26th 1915 aboard the Anchises, en route to France. On July 29th 1916 he was wounded in action, suffering shrapnel wounds to both legs, and was evacuated to the No. 1 Canadian General Hospital at Etaples. In late September 1917 he transferred to the 2nd Division Traffic Control Detachment with which he served out the war, although in late 1918 he was hospitalised with influenza. He returned to Australia on the Ypiringa, disembarking at Melbourne on July 5th 1919.
