Biography

William Harold Brownlow (SN 4137) was born at Dubbo but was a 23 year old bank clerk from Victoria Street in Ballarat when he enlisted on July 23rd 1915. He trained with the 2nd Depot Battalion at Albert Park Melbourne and the 21st Depot Battalion at Warrnambool before transferring to 8th Battalion reinforcements. He sailed from Melbourne on the Demosthenes on December 29th 1915, bound for the battlefields of France. In May 1916 he was hospitalised in France due to illness, but in November of 1917 he was found guilty of ‘concealing a disease contrary to battalion routine orders’. On August 25th 1918 he was wounded, gassed, and evacuated to the Southern General Hospital in Birmingham. After the war he was granted approval to be discharged in England in order to ’obtain tuition in optical work’ that was not available to him in Australia. He was discharged (demobilised) in London on April 30th 1920. He died in January 1943 at the age of 50
